I Don’t Have the Cooties shares a day in the life of Gracie– a spirited young girl who is living with the HIV virus. In this picture book, Gracie takes the reader on a whimsical ride while attempting to dispel the myths and stigma about the virus. Gracie plays with her friends, excels in the classroom and enjoys all the “normalcies” of childhood. The book also features basic facts supporting the text for the adult reader.
Although educational resources are abundant in the United States, the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS continues to perpetuate a culture of silence and fear. I Don’t Have the Cooties is a transitional tool to help initiate conversation and awareness between children and adults. Gracie conveys a message of inclusiveness and wellness as opposed to the stigma associated with children living with HIV/AIDS.
